It offers a route towards the Black Mountains and also the Brecon Beacons National Park. Historically the site of a Roman fort, Gobannium, it developed into a mediaeval walled town inside the Welsh Marches. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town features a permanent resident population of 10078.
