Carpets are a very popular preference of flooring, in particular in areas of the home where comfort is crucial, like living rooms and bedrooms. Carpet defines a type of flooring in which a material is either woven or tufted to a backing cloth. Carpets can be found in a wide range of colours and designs to suit any style of interior decoration, as well as in a wide variety of different types of fibre and piles. Several of the more common examples of fibre materials include the man-made fibres polypropylene and nylon, and the natural fibres wool, sisal, or jute. These types of carpet are frequently available in short or deep pile and can be manufactured by utilising a variety of manufacturing methods, such as twist, Saxony, loop pile, Berber, cut and loop, or velvet. Carpets can come in patterned, plain or striped designs. All of the different types of carpet are rated according to their performance and how effectively they stand up to different amounts of traffic. They are typically rated to be either medium domestic, meaning bedrooms or studies, heavy domestic, specifying living and dining rooms, and very heavy domestic, suited to utility rooms or hallways. It is always recommended to install carpet with a layer of underlay underneath, as this will increase the look and feel of the carpet, as well as increasing its life and providing better sound and thermal insulation.
