Carpets are a very popular selection of flooring, especially in areas of your home where comfort is essential, like living spaces and bedrooms. Carpet refers to a kind of flooring where a material is either woven or tufted to a backing cloth. Carpets come in a wide array of colours and designs to suit any type of interior decoration, as well as in numerous different kinds of fibre and piles. A few of the more widespread examples of fibre materials include the artificial fibres polypropylene and nylon, and the natural fibres wool, sisal, or jute. These kinds of carpet are commonly available in short or deep pile and can be produced by employing a variety of manufacturing methods, such as twist, Saxony, loop pile, Berber, cut and loop, or velvet. Carpets can come in patterned, plain or striped designs.
All of the various kinds of carpet are rated according to their performance and how effectively they stand up to different levels of traffic. They are generally rated to be either medium domestic, meaning bedrooms or studies, heavy domestic, specifying living and dining rooms, and very heavy domestic, suitable for utility rooms or hallways. It is always recommended to install carpet with a layer of underlay underneath, as this can improve the look and feel of the carpet, as well as increasing its life and delivering better sound and thermal insulation.
