Ceramic tiling is a common flooring option in kitchens or bathrooms. It’s commonly found in these rooms as it’s very durable and moisture resistant, particularly if you choose glazed ceramic tiles which have a moisture proof melted glass protective layer. This protective covering is resilient to stains and dirt, which means the tiles can simply be wiped clean, making them particularly easy to maintain. Ceramic tile flooring is also reasonably cheap, and comes in a huge selection of designs as they can be printed in patterns or to imitate the look of many alternative flooring options such as hardwood or natural stones. Even so, ceramic tiles continue to be popular in traditional designs such as terracotta or dark gloss.
Ceramic floor tiling is installed directly onto a concrete or backing board subfloor with a layer of mortar as adhesive and finally grout is added between the tiles to act as a sealant. Sufficient preparation of the concrete subfloor is vital when putting in ceramic tiles, as any bumps or ridges in the floor can drastically reduce the lifespan of your tiles and cause them to break or warp prematurely. Underlay cannot be used in combination with ceramic floor tiles, which may result in them feeling cool in the winter, although a popular solution to this is to add rugs to attain a warmer result.
