Barnehurst is a town and district in South East London inside the London Borough of Bexley. It’s north east of Bexleyheath, and is 13 miles east south-east of Charing Cross. It’s separated from North Bexleyheath by the A220 Erith Road.
The town was established soon after the sale of land in 1881 to make the Bexleyheath loop line in between Lewisham and Dartford. Its name comes from the name of the railway station, which was named after Colonel Barne, who owned a local property and was vice-chairman of the railway company. Currently, the railway station runs trains between London Charing Cross, London Victoria or London Cannon Street, via Lewisham and Eltham to the west and Dartford railway station to the east. There are 12 trains every hour throughout the week; on Sundays, there are 4 trains each hour. The railway station was openedto encourage the construction of homes. The Barnehurst Estate was constructed in 1926 which housed many people.
As well as the railway station, Barnehurst is served by 5 buses, 1 of which goes to the well-liked Bluewater Shopping Centre. There are not many purchasing or leisure opportunities within the town, so people generally visit surrounding places making use of public transport links or the main roads.
Barnehurst is residence towards the non-league football club Phoenix Sports FC, which plays at Phoenimx Sports Ground.
