Carpets are a very popular selection of flooring, especially in areas of your home where comfort is important, like living rooms and bedrooms. Carpet refers to a variety of flooring in which a material is either woven or tufted to a backing cloth. Carpets can be purchased in a huge variety of colours and styles to accommodate any style of interior decoration, as well as in numerous different types of fibre and piles. Several of the more popular examples of fibre materials include the synthetic fibres polypropylene and nylon, and the natural fibres wool, sisal, or jute. These kinds of carpet are generally available in short or deep pile and can be made by utilising a variety of production methods, such as twist, Saxony, loop pile, Berber, cut and loop, or velvet. Carpets are available in patterned, plain or striped designs.
All of these different types of carpet are graded according to their performance and how effectively they stand up to different levels of traffic. They are generally graded to be either medium domestic, meaning bedrooms or studies, heavy domestic, specifying living and dining rooms, and very heavy domestic, suited to utility rooms or hallways. It is always recommended to fit carpet with a layer of underlay underneath, as this can increase the look and feel of the carpet, as well as increasing its life and delivering better sound and thermal insulation.
