Carpets are a hugely popular choice of flooring, in particular in areas of your house where comfort is valuable, like living spaces and bedrooms. Carpet is the term for a kind of flooring in which a material is either woven or tufted to a backing cloth. Carpets come in a large range of colours and designs to complement any design of interior decoration, as well as in a multitude of different kinds of fibre and piles. Some of the more popular types of fibre materials include the synthetic fibres polypropylene and nylon, and the natural fibres wool, sisal, or jute. These types of carpet are commonly available in short or deep pile and can be produced by using a variety of manufacturing methods, such as twist, Saxony, loop pile, Berber, cut and loop, or velvet. Carpets may come in patterned, plain or striped designs. All of the various kinds of carpet are categorised according to their performance and how effectively they stand up to different levels of traffic. They are usually graded to be either medium domestic, meaning bedrooms or studies, heavy domestic, specifying living and dining rooms, and very heavy domestic, suited to utility rooms or hallways. It is always recommended to install carpet with a layer of underlay underneath, as this can increase the appearance of the carpet, as well as increasing its life and delivering better sound and thermal insulation.
