Carpets are an extremely popular choice of flooring, particularly in rooms of the house where comfort is essential, like living spaces and bedrooms. Carpet refers to a type of flooring where a material is either woven or tufted to a backing cloth. Carpets are available in a huge array of colours and styles to match any type of interior decoration, as well as in a number of different kinds of fibre and piles. Several of the more popular types of fibre materials include the artificial fibres polypropylene and nylon, and the natural fibres wool, sisal, or jute. These types of carpet are commonly available in short or deep pile and can be produced by using a range of production methods, such as twist, Saxony, loop pile, Berber, cut and loop, or velvet. Carpets may appear in patterned, plain or striped designs.
All of the various kinds of carpet are scored according to their performance and how successfully they are suited to different amounts of traffic. They are normally rated to be either medium domestic, meaning bedrooms or studies, heavy domestic, specifying living and dining rooms, and very heavy domestic, suitable for utility rooms or hallways. It is always recommended to fit carpet with a layer of underlay underneath, as this will enhance the look and feel of the carpet, as well as increasing its life and delivering better sound and thermal insulation.
