Ceramic tiling is a common flooring option in kitchens or bathrooms. It’s generally fitted in these rooms as it’s very durable and moisture resistant, particularly if you opt for glazed ceramic tiles which feature a moisture proof melted glass protective coating. This protective covering is resilient to stains and dirt, which means the tiles can simply be wiped clean, making them very simple to care for. Ceramic tile flooring is also relatively cheap, and comes in a huge choice of designs as they can be printed in patterns or to mimic the look of many alternative flooring options such as wood or natural stones. Even so, ceramic tiles continue to be extremely popular in traditional designs such as terracotta or dark gloss. Ceramic floor tiling is installed directly onto a concrete or backing board subfloor with a layer of mortar as adhesive and finally grout is added in between the tiles to act as a sealant. Adequate preparation of the concrete subfloor is vital when putting in ceramic tiles, as any bumps or ridges in the floor can considerably decrease the lifespan of your tiles and cause them to crack or bend prematurely. Underlay cannot be used with ceramic floor tiles, which can result in them feeling cold in winter months, although a popular solution for this is to include rugs to accomplish a warmer appearance.

Dunbeath is a town in south-east Caithness, Scotland on the A9 road. It was the birth place of Neil M. Gunn (1891-1973), author of The Silver Darlings, Highland River etc., much of whose stories are embeded in Dunbeath and also its Strath. Dunbeath has a really abundant archaeological landscape, the site of numerous Iron Age brochs and also a very early middle ages monastic site (see Alex Morrison’s historical study, “Dunbeath: A Cultural Landscape”.) Of Dunbeath’s landscape, Gunn composed: “These little straths, like the Strath of Dunbeath, have this intimate elegance. In boyhood we learn more about every square lawn of it. We encompass it literally and also our memories hold it. Birches, hazel trees for nutting, swimming pools with trout and a periodically visible salmon, river-flats with the wind on the bracken and going away bunny scuts, a wealth of wild blossom and also little bird life, the soaring hawk, the unforeseen roe, the ancient graveyard, thoughts of the folk that once lived far inland in straths as well as hollows, the past as well as today held in a moment of day-dream.” (‘My Bit of Britain’, 1941.). There is a community museum/landscape interpretation centre at the old village school.
