Renovating floors may require a variety of tasks, from cleaning and maintenance, repairing existing flooring or even entirely removing and replacing flooring. The kind of restoration work will vary among the kind of the existing floor. In older homes with period floors like flagstone, quarry tile or parquet, renovation will typically include repair and cleaning of the present floor as it will likely be an important feature of the house. In newer properties with carpet or real wood flooring, renovation is more likely to involve entirely exchanging the existing flooring, either like for like employing a similar material, or by changing from one material to another. For wooden flooring, the method of renovation commonly involves sanding the top layer of wood down, cleaning and then revarnishing or staining. Tile flooring can be cleaned and any broken or damaged tiles replaced, accompanied by regrouting or resealing. For carpets, maintenance can usually only extend to cleaning of the pile, any further issues or damage will usually require replacing the carpet. Experienced floor renovation companies will be able to advise you of the best method to breathe new life into tired floors or bring old flooring up to a high standard. Specialist tools might also be necessary for repairing or replacing flooring.

Dunbeath is a village in south-east Caithness, Scotland on the A9 road. It was the birth place of Neil M. Gunn (1891-1973), writer of The Silver Darlings, Highland River and so on, most of whose books are embeded in Dunbeath and also its Strath. Dunbeath has a very abundant archaeological landscape, the website of countless Iron Age brochs and an early medieval monastic site (see Alex Morrison’s archaeological survey, “Dunbeath: A Cultural Landscape”.) Of Dunbeath’s landscape, Gunn composed: “These little straths, like the Strath of Dunbeath, have this intimate charm. In boyhood we learn more about every square backyard of it. We include it literally as well as our memories hold it. Birches, hazel trees for nutting, swimming pools with trout and a periodically visible salmon, river-flats with the wind on the bracken and vanishing bunny scuts, a wealth of wild blossom as well as small bird life, the soaring hawk, the unforeseen roe, the ancient graveyard, ideas of the individual that once lived far inland in straths as well as hollows, the past and also today held in a minute of day-dream.” (‘My Little Britain’, 1941.). There is a community museum/landscape interpretation centre at the old village institution.
