Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town located 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies in the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided among the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream called Leadmill Gill, is in the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Every parish has its personal parish council. It’s the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of about 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to become a short-term camp to accommodate two complete divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to develop to over 25000 by 2020, making it the largest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its 1st substantial supermarket in 2000, along with a retail park referred to as ‘Richmondshire Walk’, which also includes a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher plus a Peacocks, amongst others. ‘Catterick Leisure Centre’ is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it delivers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities including a swimming pool, and a fitness centre, in addition to an adjoining public library.
