Ceramic tiling is a widespread flooring option in kitchens or bathrooms. It’s often used in these rooms as it is extremely durable and moisture resistant, especially if you choose glazed ceramic tiles which have a moisture proof melted glass protective coating. This protective coating is resistant to stains and dirt, meaning the tiles can merely be wiped clean, making them very easy to maintain. Ceramic tile flooring is also comparatively affordable, and comes in a huge choice of designs as they can be printed in patterns or to imitate the appearance of many different flooring options such as hardwood or natural stones. However, ceramic tiles continue to be extremely popular in traditional designs such as terracotta or dark gloss.
Ceramic floor tiling is installed directly onto a concrete or backing board subfloor with a layer of mortar as adhesive and finally grout is added in between the tiles to act as a sealant. Proper preparation of the concrete subfloor is essential when putting in ceramic tiles, as any bumps or ridges in the floor can noticeably decrease the lifespan of your tiles and cause them to break or bend prematurely. Underlay cannot be used in combination with ceramic floor tiles, which can lead to them feeling cold in the winter, although a common remedy to this is to add rugs to achieve a warmer appearance.
